It is important to keep your address up to date with the IRS, otherwise you may miss or get delayed delivery of your tax returns or other crucial IRS correspondence.

The easiest way to update your address with the IRS differs depending on when your address changes.

1. Address change before filing
    • If you change your address shortly before filing you can simply write the new address on your return when you file and the IRS will update the records for you. Make sure to notify your return preparer.

2. Address change after filing

    • If you change your address and the next filing is more than a month away you will want to update your address manually. To do this, simply fill out Form 8822 and send it to the address shown under the "Where To File" section on Page 2.

Great! Now what?

It can take four to six weeks for your request to be fully processed. The IRS is now updated on your new address!

Reminders/Warnings:

Always notify the post office of any and all address changes.

Form 8822 on this page is up to date as of: 12/23/20, always check irs.gov for the most up to date forms.
